UPD dons pink badges for breast cancer awareness

Members of the Uvalde Police Department will be sporting pink police badges throughout the month of October to offer encouragement to cancer patients, and in particular to those diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We wear the pink badges to bring awareness of the disease and to let everyone who is battling this type of disease know that they are not alone. This is important to us, because we want our community to know that we are praying for each and every person who is battling this awful disease,” said Daniel Rodriguez, chief of the Uvalde Police Department.

“We will be wearing our pink badges throughout the month of October, and we encourage the community to talk to an officer about them. We will gladly answer any question they may have.”

Rodriguez said this is the second year the department will be showcasing the pink badges during National Breast Cancer Awareness month, observed during the month of October.

UPD public information officer Jessica Zamora said each officer and investigator was assigned at pink badge to use during the month of October. She said the department obtained a total of 40 badges from V.H. Blackinton and Co., Inc., based in Massachusetts.

Blackinton donates 10 percent of sales from their Breast Cancer Awareness badge line equally between two charities. The company has so far allocated about $27,000 between the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, a Rhode Island-based nonprofit, and the nationwide Firefighter Cancer Support Network.
