Hours after pro-Trump protesters swarmed the U.S. Capitol, the House and Senate returned to resume certification of the Electoral College votes for president.
The bill will reinstate supplemental unemployment benefits of $300 per week, and extend eviction protections through the end of January. The legislation also allocates another $284 billion to the Paycheck Protection Program.
Electors across the country were casting ballots Monday and are expected to deliver the 270 votes needed to award the election to former Vice President Joe Biden by the end of the day. Trump and many Texas Republicans have not yet acknowledged defeat.
Republicans say they have built a major advantage by resuming door-knocking more quickly and aggressively amid the coronavirus pandemic, while Democrats say they are being the more responsible party while reaching voters in other ways.
