Incumbent Texas Railroad Commissioner Jim Wright will face former chairman of the Tarrant County Republican Party Bo French in the Republican runoff on May 26 after neither candidate secured a majority of the vote in Tuesday night’s primary.
The Railroad Commission of Texas is the state’s oldest regulatory agency and was originally created to oversee railroads, until this authority was transferred to the Texas Department of Transportation in 2005. The Railroad Commission now primarily regulates the state’s energy industry while enforcing several federal environmental and pipeline safety laws.
