As election night stretched into the late hours, unofficial vote totals showed U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX-23) narrowly leading the Republican primary field — but falling short of the majority needed to avoid a runoff.
With a large majority of the precincts reporting as of 11:30 p.m., Gonzales was shown receiving 43.15 percent of the vote, totaling 18,939 ballots cast in his favor. Close behind him was challenger Brandon Herrera, who captured 42.12 percent, or 18,485 votes.
