More than half of Texas public schools are experiencing a decline in enrollment, with charter schools emerging as the leading alternative for families.
Fifty-eight percent of traditional Texas public school districts saw enrollment decline from fall 2019 to fall 2024, according to a report by Texas A&M University’s Private Enterprise Research Center. While Texas saw almost 8 percent growth in the state’s overall population during this time period, public school enrollment fell 1 percent while charter enrollment grew by 29.4 percent.
