The Texas Department of Public Safety ( DPS) has warned one provider of automatic license plate readers ( ALPR ) over the use of their network for private homes and businesses without a state-required license, in addition to permitting law enforcement to continue using a contentious surveillance technology that captures data without a warrant.
DPS officials wrote in a letter to Flock Safety’s general guidance Mark Smith on July 10, 2024, that “if you are performing any function regulated by the personal security act, you may soon cease and desist from doing so until you are properly licensed.”
