Thanks to a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ( TPWD )” no fee” access lease on the Guadalupe River, anglers have access to a top location for rainbow trout fishing during the peak of the winter stocking season.
Almost a half mile of bank accessibility along overlapping pools and revolvers on the Guadalupe River is at Camp Huaco Springs, which is located between New Braunfels and Sattler. Anglers can either swim bass both upstream and downstream to take advantage of a low-water dam at the top property or a deep pool at the lower end of the bank, which is carefully sloped and rough. For the purpose of fishing, they can also establish non-motorized vessels, canoes, kayaks, or other floating devices.
” This rent site gives river salmon anglers great exposure to creek fishing and beautiful scenery,” said Patrick Ireland, San Marcos and Austin District Supervisor for TPWD’s Inland Fisheries Division.
Public access begins on December 5 and runs through March 7 for 30 minutes before sun and 30 days after sunset.
TPWD will stock this and other areas of the Canyon Tailrace ( Guadalupe River downstream of Canyon Reservoir ) with close to 20, 000 rainbow trout during weekly stockings from early December through late January. This total includes 5, 050 trout provided by the Water-Oriented Recreation District of Comal County ( WORD ) to supplement TPWD’s efforts. Guadalupe Park, Camp Huaco Springs, and the River Road third and fourth valley crossings are among the staging areas.
Rainbow trout are also available throughout the valley during the colder months thanks to the Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited Book ( GRTU), a lover of TPWD. Generally, GRTU fish are larger than TPWD stock. Before fishing, anglers should examine the 2025-26 Trout Stocking Schedule online to ensure the date and to discover additional winter trout stocking program locations and advice.
Since Camp Huaco Springs is subject to nationwide fish regulations, anglers may continue to catch up to their daily bag limit of five fish without having a maximum length restriction. A true hunting permit that includes a freshwater fishing endorsement is required for trot fishermen 17 years of age and older.
Anglers may discover people access to the creek in other areas that are stocked with trout in areas where specific rules and limits start 800 yards inland from the Canyon Dam release to the next bridge crossing on River Road.
