Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, January 13, 2024, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ( TPWD ) will close TX- 19 in Matagorda Bay to commercial and recreational oyster harvest.
This conclusion is supported by samples recently gathered by TPWD that demonstrate a small abundance of oysters of legal size. To develop standards for closing areas for yield, TPWD collaborated with the oyster business. Based on the quantity of oysters that are 3 feet or larger, the conditions include oyster characteristics when they fall below specific thresholds.
All places that are officially closed for harvest will still be monitored by TPWD, and they will be reopened once they meet the requirements.
On the Texas Department of State Health Services ( DSHS) website, you can view a map of oyster harvesting areas along with the most recent status data on each region.
