IT’S 6: 00 AM, IT’S SO QUIET you can almost hear your own heartbeat, the sun begins to crest over the horizon, the water is glass, and it is so beautiful you ca n’t tell the water from the sky. This is the Laguna Madre Canvas, or Laguna Madre Canvas, which signifies the Coastal Bend’s beginning of summer fish.
We can then concentrate on our normal summer plans because the unpredictable weather has changed and we now experience more consistent southeast winds and summertime tides. Depending on what we are aiming for and how our clients like to fish, fall, or swim, our fishing methods can get a variety of different ones. One of the ways we aim for redfish is by drifting through deep flats, casting to dust potholes, and pulling our bait through to prepare for the incredible redfish ambush. Our second alternative, which is definitely one of our favorites, is view angling in the clearer waters for reds. See the lungs flare up as they engulf your lure, which is a huge adrenaline rush, and the struggle begins. Our customers ‘ most popular swim fish strategy is wade fishing the shallow flats early, throwing top waters and gentle plastics, and then moving to the drop off edges as the temperature rises throughout the day because the target fish will cut off the cooler water.

With these shallow flats to drop offs that run from Mustang Island, Bird Island, and all the way down to the Lower Laguna Madre, we have miles and miles of shorelines. Between these landmarks, it’s difficult to not spot bait.
Shamrock Cove and Mustang Island’s back bays are another big hotspot for tourists during this time of year. Why? Because, the back bay estuaries are the mecca for hatchlings of crab, shrimp, and all kinds of unique bait that reds and trout ca n’t resist.
After a very long day of grinding and fishing, I was stumbling over an old salt in the harbor while drinking an adult beverage. We were chatting about the day I fished. He steadfastly told me about an old wives ‘ tale that an old salt had told him about the founding of Shamrock Island. I’d thought I would share this interesting story with you all, how true it is, is another question.
Many years ago, a hermit lived on Shamrock Island. He is alleged to have been a botanist, who introduced many new species of plants to the island, including those for which it is named. They discovered that he was a member of the Russian Nobility when he passed away in 1917. Rumors suggested that he had buried royal treasures on the island, but nothing was ever discovered. Local fishermen are a favorite in the area around Shamrock Island and Shamrock Cove right now.
