Vicente Gonzalez, a former federal attorney and a Democratic representative in the United States, and Eric Flores, a Republican, are in a heated debate for re-election. The district’s mid-decade legislature was carried out in favor of Republicans, and the result may determine which party will win the U.S. House.
Those margins may have appeared inconceivable a few years back. In one of Texas’s most democratic regions, the Rio Grande Valley, Congressional District ( CD ) 34 was once the most Democratic district during the middle of a decade of redistricting. Due to President Donald Trump’s era, it often received more than two thirds of the vote from Democrats in Cameron County, which had a blue-leaning population.
Joe Biden won the region by 15 percentage points even in the presidential election of 2020. Although Hillary Clinton’s 36-percentage-point lead four years earlier, that was still a respectable shade of blue.
However, the district’s 2010 generation was significantly more purple, with only 4 percentage points going to Biden. When then-U. Republican Mayra Flores won a special election in 2022 to serve the remainder of his term after Sen. Filemon Vela (D-TX-34 ) left the chamber. She then applied for a full word under the more recent, more obscene lines.
When CD 15 started to become more Republican, Gonzalez, who had previously contested the seat, decided to run against Flores. CD 15 then gained the right to elect U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-TX-15 ).
Although Flores won, the car’s Democratic muscular was very great. Gonzalez won her favor by about 8 %. With Trump’s rise in the Rio Grande Valley, Flores sought a rematch in 2024 and was able to gain some more help. She lost by 2.6 percentage positions, despite Trump winning the city by about 5 %.
One of the votes that Republicans targeted when they redraw Texas’s legislative maps in 2025 was CD 34. They added portions of Nueces County and removed the portion of the city that extended into Hidalgo County. Under the new lines, Trump’s ratio for 2024 increased to 10 percent items.
And unlike the modifications to CD 28, there was no restriction on the switch until 2024. The city now has a significantly larger Republican base thanks to the changes. Republican nominee Mitt Romney may have won only 31 % of the voting in the new district in 2012 if he had won.
The Hidalgo County piece of CD 34, which is removed from this map, ran the most forward of Kamala Harris in 2024, according to Crystal Ball of the University of Virginia. Gonzalez has not previously represented the place that makes up nearly 40 % of the city.
In other words, Latinos ‘ return has less of an impact on the Democratic vote in CD 34, and it has less of a repercussion. This is good why, despite national Republicans pulling out of CD 28, they are still in the field in CD 34.
In 2026, Mayra Flores resurrected. However, the former representative didn’t find the next time appealing. No reference to her, who won the Democratic nomination by defeating her with an unrelated relationship. After that, she launched a campaign and attracted well-known visits from politicians like Vice President J. D. Vance and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
He has criticized Gonzalez for being ineffective in the legislature, claiming that the president has” seen his time in Congress as a celebrated piece of furniture, collecting a paycheck and making thousands,” while” South Texas people have struggled to make ends meet.”
” I’ve demonstrated leadership skills and will stand up and fight for our country every time” Trump’s immigration policies are supported by Reyes, who claimed constantly in his stump speeches that the phrase “glorified piece of furniture” was used.
Gonzalez has, for his piece, attempted to distance himself from the Democratic National Party. He cited the Democratic Party’s “fumbled the game on the border” under Biden as an example of emigration.
” During that management, I was quite outspoken. I’m pleased to see that some of the laws that President Trump implemented have improved the circumstances at the borders. I’m also entirely opposed to some of the ICE attacks that have occurred, Gonzalez said.
He continued,” He has been outspoken about Corpus Christi’s water problems.”
Both candidates ‘ main concerns have been the economy and pricing, which have become increasingly important to citizens.
Gonzalez held a close lead over Flores, 45 to 42 percent, in the only race-related open poll conducted by Texas Southern University. The district’s electorate voted for Chris Royal, the Libertarian, while 3 percentage voted for Eddie Espinoza, the Green Party member. Confused, only 8 percent, sufficiently to make Gonzalez or Flores the winner.
Only 2 percent of Trump voters were supporting Gonzalez, compared to CD 28 in which U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX-28 ) had significant cross-over support from voters who had previously supported Trump. The same 2 percentage of Harris 2024 citizens voted in favor of Flores. However, Gonzalez held a major 20-percentage-point lead over independents.
Both individuals have campaigned for a lot of money. In the last fundraising quarter, Gonzalez raised$ 871, 795, spent$ 230, 353, and retained$ 2, 602, 508 cash on hand. For his part, Flores raised 750, 441, spent$ 510, 908, and had$ 683, 332 cash on hand. Gonzalez and Flores both had significant debt, with Rodriguez and Flores having outstanding amounts of$ 425, 000 and$ 591, 622, respectively.
The new district receives an R-52 % on the Texas Partisan Index, compared to the previous D-54 %. Election officials have said the competition is toss-up or leaning toward Gonzalez.
