A Harris County court is set to hear a lawsuit filed by a group of Houston-area mothers challenging a new statute requiring the display of donated copies of the Ten Commandments in public schools under the state’s religious freedom law, instead of under federal law as in previous suits.
Senate Bill (SB) 10, which requires public schools to display copies of the King James Bible version of the Ten Commandments in classrooms if donated by an outside source, was passed during the 89th regular legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott in June 2025.
