A quiet change is about to make its way across the fish industry along the Gulf Coast, from Louisiana’s marshes to Texas ‘ bays. As Southern flounder started their crucial fall movement and spawning season, both states are working to impose their annual crumble closures, which are temporary bans.
No fish may be lawfully harvested during the Texas shutdown, which runs from November 1 through December 14. Just catch and release is permitted during this time. The six-week pause, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, helps prevent older female flounder from entering the Gulf from deep bays. When the shutdown is lifted, anglers is once more keep up to five crumble per time, each measuring at least 15 inches.
Louisiana’s closing comes a little earlier than that across the border. Both recreational and professional crops are prohibited nationwide from October 15 through November 30. This rule, according to the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, applies to all types of products, including bycatch from crab trawls as part of a wider effort to rehabilitate the species ‘ sluggish population.
Between mid-October and mid-December, when fish fishing significantly slows along the northern Gulf, these shutdown add up to a window. That schedule does sting for guides and trip anglers because it falls right in the middle of what is typically the most popular fall hunting season, when cool waters cause solid bites from flounder, redfish, and speckled trout. Due to the limits, some anglers use this time to fill freezers or reserve charters, making things a little more difficult on both the weekends and the wallets.
Why is there a press? According to researchers, float fly offshore to reproduce during this time, leaving them vulnerable to overharvest. In recent years, communities across the Gulf have decreased, leading to state intervention by implementing protection closures. The goal is straightforward: give the fish a chance to reproduce untouched and ensure better numbers for upcoming seasons.
