Bandera ISD board honors Navy’s nuclear graduates

By Tracy Thayer at the Bandera Bulletin, Dec. 17, 2020

The Bandera Independent School District Board of Trustees met at Bandera Middle School on Monday, December 14 to name students and staff of the month, present the state-placing running teams and recognize parents representing Bandera High School (BHS) graduates who had attended the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command. Other special and routine agenda items were covered.

A group of parents and family members were at the meeting representing BHS graduates who had attended the Navy Nuclear Power Training Command.

Five recent graduates have attended that prestigious school and are currently working in nuclear power plants aboard U. S. submarines or aircraft carriers.

BHS’ Naval ROTC Commander Mike Gard noted it is considered an honor to qualify to attend this prestigious training school. Gard remained at the

Gard remained at the podium to accept a $500 donation to the district’s Navy ROTC program from American Legion Post 157. He reported that the donation would be used on student activities to enhance recruitment to the program.

Susan Junker and Bill Cox made the donation on behalf of the legion.

Alkek Elementary Principal Dixie Moseley presented their Students of the Month, 5th graders Lydia Rook and Micah Toomire. Mosley also presented Alkek’s Staff Member of the Month, Michelle Cummings.

Athletic Director Joel Fontenot-Amedee presented the BHS Cross Country teams. The Lady Bulldogs, led by Assistant Athletic Director Brooke Ashcraft, placed fourth at state and the boy’s team, led by Coach Sam Farrell, placed eighth at the state meet.

The Consent Agenda was approved unanimously.

Dr. Jerry Hollingsworth gave the Superintendent’s Report, noting the district currently had 2,205 enrolled students and attendance rate was higher than expected.

He attributed this to the opportunity for students who are home sick to be able to do their daily classwork virtually, allowing the district to count that day toward the district attendance rate.

Hollingsworth also reviewed the results of the BISD employee survey. He presented a chart that compared results over time.

Special Services Director Patricia Galm presented a report on the district’s academic performance data on the Results Driven Accountability system.

Facilities Director Ed Barnes presented a report on current projects including the Middle School Field House. Chief Financial Officer Mike Newman reviewed the monthly financial reports of the district.

In Regular Agenda action, the board voted to approve the changes to Board Policy CPC(Local) which names the Chief Financial Officer, Mike Newman, as the district’s Records Management Officer.

The board approved the district’s Five-Year Goals and also approved the BISD Trustees Code of Ethics and the Board Operating Procedures.

The next meeting of the Board of Trustees will be on Monday, January 11, 2021.
