A subject was detained by Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries ( LDWF ) enforcement on August 21 for alleged wildlife violations in Caldwell Parish.
Officials arrested Taryn J. Varnell, 18, of Grayson, for aggravated cruelty to animals and taking a spotted deer and booked him into the Caldwell Correctional Center.
On July 9, officials began looking into Varnell after seeing a film that showed him choking a noticed deer to death.
Officials were able to detect Varnell and made contact with him on Aug. 21 at his home. Varnell admitted to the officials that he was the shooter who was filmed killing the elk.
Aggravated cruelty to animals brings a$ 5, 000 to$ 25, 000 fine and one to 10 years in jail. Taking a spotted fawn carries a$ 500 to$ 750 fine and 15 to 30 days in jail.
For the replacement value of the illegally taken deer, Varnell may also be subject to civil compensation in the amount of$ 1, 624.
