The National Marine Fisheries Service and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ( TPWD ) have the authority to establish the red snapper fishery in federal waters off the Texas coast in accordance with an agreement. When the country’s annual poundage is reached, TPWD uses capture data to determine the longest national season in Texas. Texas tries to maintain status waters open all year by leaving enough weight to support the fishing from national waters shut down until the finish of the year.
The 98-day time in federal waterways is coming to an end with the Sept. 6 closing date, which also allows state waters to stay open until the allotted weight is reached.
Red fish hunting chances were slowed down by this year’s early arrival of tropical storms, as well as Hurricane Beryl’s effect on the Texas coast. Red snapper landings earlier in the season helped TPWD stay open past Labor Day Weekend, which was much-anticipated.
