Next MAY, I JOINED my friend Gray Thornton and Capt. Eric Glass fly fishing for redfish for three weeks off South Padre Island’s Lower Laguna Madre.
On day two, as I headed back to the dock, I observed a passing fish about 15 miles to the east.
It was n’t a red.
And it was n’t a trout or a drum or sheepshead.
” It’s a pompano”, I shouted.
Thornton said,” Yes, it is”.
Southwestern pompanos can sometimes be found in Lower Laguna Madre and are not uncommon in South Texas.
However, in recent years, the Texas Coast’s force have appeared more often.

Is it possible that we witnessed a force, the world’s most coveted flatfish, on South Padre Island’s flats?
We’ll never know, but throughout the rest of the journey, we had an off-and-on talk about it.
Many anglers believe they have a Texas fishing permit, but are disappointed to learn it was a southern pompano ( a close relative ) or even a jack crevalle ( a similar shape and colors ).
In late March while fishing the Texas City Dike, Christy Real catches and releases the real deal. According to sources from the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, there have been a number of smaller permits in the Galveston habitat over the past few years.
The renowned Flats Slam, which includes bonefish and tarpon, is a beautiful flats types that can get big and are permitted. Force are regarded as the moodiest flats slam species and will frequently disregard the most strategically placed lure or fly.

That enigmatic passing tuna in the South Padre Island flats will never be forgotten. Regardless of whether it was a permit or bluefish, it was still extremely nice and demonstrated how diverse Texas is are.
