I’ll describe how I see ultralight when aiming for seafood like this in the 15 to 20 inches collection because different people have different definitions of what constitutes it. This equipment has enough beef to prevent overpowering smaller fish while also giving you a good chance of landing the majority of slot-sized fish. All you have to do with this setup is locate a riprap point, dock-lined shoreline, or some grassy areas. The mini-reds are much more common than larger fish, and when you precisely target them, it is typically not difficult to find reasonably large numbers. The little people also tend to eat most or all of the day and aren’t as finicky about tides and currents.
Will you be able to win a medal for bragging about on Facebook while doing this? Nope. Reach for that ultralight products, though, if you’re only out for some fun on a quick morning or afternoon of fishing, or you want to give your newcomer plenty of action.
