Coast blue marlin and Atlantic fish weigh more than 800 pounds each, as well as their heads and the fork length measurement, are required by researchers at the University of Maine. By gathering hard parts like their otoliths or hearing bones, they hope to study these large girls’ ages and growth. Please let us know if you land one or know of anyone who has! Each of them will be shipped and packaged at their own expense.

Once more, all that is required for measurements of knife length and Coast blue marlin and swordfish is their head.
The procedures for set are as follows:
- The lower jaw may be cut right along, the upper bill removed, and the jaw hinge down removed.
- Please leave the back of the head intact while the lungs are removed.
- Above the neck hinge, you are left with a tiny head stop.
- If necessary, that part can be frozen; it won’t harm the sample.
- If it’s close to a partner, ask Dr. Walt Golet at the University of Maine to remove the microfossils or arrange for it to be sent to them.
