
Gov. Greg Abbott cited the threat it poses to livestock, wildlife, and the economy as the reason that the state of Texas is in danger of becoming a disaster because of the New World screwworm ( NWS ) parasite’s presence.
The dangerous flesh-eating livestock pest, which was recently eradicated in the United States in the 1960s, made its way up through Mexico over the past time, and was discovered in Zavala County this week in a three-week old chicken’s umbilical cord.
