The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission has approved hunting rules for the 2024-2020 year, adding the following changes and clarifications to the state-wide hunting and migration game bird proclamations:
- Because of Texas ‘ ongoing declines in wintering light birds, it is necessary to remove the Light Goose Conservation Order from both the eastern and western regions.
- Increase the normal bird year in the Eastern Zone by 19 times so that more people can hunt during the normal season.
- Reduce the number of gentle ducks per day from 10 to 5 in both the eastern and western areas.
- For consistency, regulate the light geese’s possession cap to three times the regular bag cap.
- Change to a reduced black goose daily bag limit of five in the european zone to reduce the total number of white-fronted geese daily bags.

- Change the next segment’s went season structure to allow for more bird hunting during the holiday season.
- To enhance the management of wild turkeys, nationwide requirements for all wild turkeys must be reported on all seasons and in all counties in order to improve harvest data.
- Near the spring-only hunting season for wild birds north of Highway 82 in Fannin, Lamar, Red River and Bowie districts due to ongoing wild turkey recovery by TPWD, NWTF and landowners.
- Close all wild turkey hunting seasons in Bell and Williamson counties east of Interstate 35 (I-35 ) and in all of Milam County to allow TPWD and landowners to restock wild turkeys for population restoration.
- Replace the word “wild turkey ” in restrictions with the Rio Grande and the Eastern wild turkey subspecies to make things simpler.
- West of the Pecos River, Brewster, Jeff Davis, Pecos, and Terrell districts ‘ wild turkey hunting seasons and annual case limits should be reduced. Comal, Hays, Hill, McLennan, and Travis Counties east of I-35, and Guadalupe County north of I-10 to a spring-only season from April 1-30 and a one gobbler ( male turkey ) annual bag limit to be more proportionate with wild turkey populations.

- Allow children to produce bucks with a rifle for the same times that relate to the county’s first youth-only time according to state regulations for properties enrolled in the Harvest Option of the Managed Lands Deer Program.
- To better control white-tailed elk populations, article oak Savannah and Pineywoods ecoregions have expanded their client days in 43 counties.
- Expand the fall’s youth-only times to contain Friday for white-tailed deer, rodents, and wild turkeys to increase searching opportunities for young people.
Hunters hitting the field in the upcoming season should make note of these changes and following all rules set for types, tagging, case limits, counties, time dates, means and methods. Hunters may check the Outdoor Annual for complete and updated requirements for the 2024-25 year beginning May 13 on the TPWD website. Data now in the Outdoor Annual reflects last season’s information.
