Pursuant to the quadrennial requirement in the Texas Constitution, the 40 presidential electors for the 2024 election met in Austin on Tuesday to cast their ballots for President-elect Donald Trump and vice president-elect J.D. Vance.
The process is less pivotal than it once was, as each party selects its own set of electors in each state who promise to vote for their pledged candidate based on the statewide election result. At the Founding of the country, electors were not bound to candidates. But things changed substantially after the debacle of the 1800 election, then again during the 1820s, and once more during the Progressive Era of the early 20th century.
