Texas Democrats find themselves in the political wilderness following their shambolic 2024 election up and down the ballot, and one of the handful of issues Republicans used against them last year was crime and public safety.
For a half-century, Democrats across the country maintained the broad parameters of the FDR coalition — made up of blue collar labor, public sector unions, racial minorities, southern Dixiecrats, big city political machines, and religious groups like Jews and Catholics. This led to the Democratic Party’s domination of Congress even while Republicans were able to win the presidency during most of the 20th century.
