The Gulf Coast’s deep lake rivers are one of the best places to find redfish on the Upper Texas and Louisiana shores. They frequently contain large redfish, but they are also abundant.
Wolf Packs
Early and late redfish in these areas tend to travel in little “wolf packs” and pull along riprap, docks and fall- offs. These reds wo n’t always feed aggressively on the surface, so it’s important to wear polarized shades and keep an eye out for reds that push wakes or simply sit around important pieces of cover.

Emptying Marsh Lagoons
Target the areas where large lake lakes are emptied out by these canals or deposited into bays or rivers as incoming waves. Reds swarm in the deepest holes and completely hammer the menhaden, shellfish, and crabs that are emerging from the lake. These canals usually run 3 to 6 feet deep, and tidal flow causes potholes when there are adjacent canals or pond edges. They can be as strong as two feet or as shallow as six feet, and they are red ‘ magnets.
A Gulp! It’s difficult to beat a Shrimp or a Going Mullet fished under a popping lid. Try the same setup with the largest shrimp you can find for life baiters.
These are also fantastic locations to catch square-billed crankbaits, which are great for deep water and can cover a lot of water, which are essential for these kinds of ecosystems. Just chuck them out and clip them in as quickly as possible. The majority of them are designed to “walk” most effectively at a high rate of speed.
The” Cone of Vision”
Anglers should bear in mind that colors have what is best be described as a” cones of vision,” a term that was first used by the late outside writer/redfish expert Ed Holder. Reds you notice about 180 degrees, and the most striking shots are most likely to be made in front of the purple and perhaps just off to the part. Remember that precision casting is crucial when using a visible on the reds because they often turn around and strike at something they can only hear.

Be prepared for a fight if you discover these super-sized red being taught. Do n’t be alarmed if you’ve been repeatedly skunked because big reds move quickly in the bay and river systems.
