Sen. John Thune (R-SD) won the race for U.S. Senate GOP leader in a closed-door vote on Wednesday morning, a position that will become the chamber’s majority leader in January. Thune defeated Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) on a second ballot.
According to reports, the first round of voting went: 23 for Thune, 15 for Cornyn, and 13 for Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL). On the second ballot, Thune won 29 to Cornyn’s 24.
