Opponents of a double-digit percent tax rate increase in Smithville, including state Rep. Stan Gerdes (R-Smithville ), succeeded in forcing the city government to adopt a lowered rate in future fiscal year’s budget.
A 7.2 percent increase in the property tax rate, in contrast to the general tax increase, and a reduction of the individual cost of living adjustment from 3 percent to 1 percent were included in the council’s$ 7.3 million budget for 2024-25. The adopted budget is a 14.7 percent increase, growing spending by$ 356, 300.
