Red fish season for private fun fishing in federal waters begins on June 1. In Texas condition waters, dark fish fishing is available year-round. Federal and state water size and baggage regulations will be the same.
Red snapper is subject to the following rules in national waters:
- There is a 16-inch required size cap for two carp per person per day.
- Dark fish caught in federal waters qualifies as a four-fish state bag restrict.
- When in national lakes, no more than two red fish can be in possession.
Red fish in express waters regulations:
- Four fish per person per day are allowed, with a 15-inch maximum size cap.
- In state lakes, no more than four crimson fish can be found while hunting.
Our goal is to keep Texas anglers fishing for red snapper for as long as possible while keeping our standard year-long red snapper hunting in Texas state waters, according to Director of Coastal Fisheries Division Robin Riechers. In recent years, state management has given us more seasons as well as better fishing opportunities.
All professional and recreational anglers may have a releasing tool or manipulated descending gadget on their boat when fishing for reef fish in national waters, in accordance with the 2022 DESCEND Act. Research shows that effectively releasing reef fish, such as red snapper, helps reduce mortality. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopted laws last year that were influenced by the DESCEND Act. For coral fish that have distension symptoms, these rules apply to all professional and recreational anglers who are caught in state waters.
Texas fish are urged to use the My Texas Hunt Harvest App to record their red fish catches because it is a critical component of successful fisheries management in Texas. Additionally, anglers can use the software to register game species harvested, see harvest history, save photos, and share harvests with friends on social media. Prior to the state’s intended capture limit has been reached, the Coastal Fisheries Division will give the public a public notice of the closing date for the secret pleasure season. TPWD will release all communication systems, including the Outdoor Annual, website and social media accounts, when it determines that closing time.
