State Rep. John Smithee (R-Amarillo ) is officially in the race for Texas House speaker, he confirmed to The Texan.

Smithee is the first candidate to challenge Speaker Dade Phelan (R-Beaumont ) in the race after filing his declaration of candidacy with the Texas Ethics Commission on Friday night.
