THESE Measures DON’T appear to be secure.
Wrong Willie was standing on the wooden measures a dozen feet below the entrance to my three-person deer walk when I peered through the darkness at him. Dawn was thirty minutes away. The metal roof was rattled by rain and snow. ” They’re in good shape. To ensure that they are secure, I threaded five-inch screws through the area.
He painted the handmade stand with his flashlight beam while squinting up. It appears that you patched a area gap.
” Had to.” Flying velociraptors were coming and going. You’re fairly perceptive for this hour of the morning. I flung open the door and entered. Being out of the chilly weather felt great.
Willie made a Shetland pony-like sound as he climbed the stairs. He slammed the door shut behind him and pounded his rifle’s mouth against the wood ceiling.
To grant him more space, I squeaked to the side. ” Are you attempting to make sounds?”
” I’m attempting to escape this cold.”
” This place doesn’t get much warmer.” I sat down in an outdated office chair that someone had given me decades earlier.
Willie quickly activated his torch, which he waved like the light saber of Darth Vader. ” Dang. Is there a novel floor on the ground?
” Yes, sir. possessed some in the apartment.
” Man, this is downtown ,” she said. He took a moment to look inside with his lighting. ” All the bees froze to death in these, but it’s so cool!”
” That is without a doubt.” I recently brought out a machine and the vacuum clean from the War Department. By the time all was clear, half of the vessel had been filled. There must have been a thousand dying bugs inside. There are also a few freeze-dried creature corpses.
He sat down in the other chair and turned off his getting light, disregarding my comedy. ” This is nicer than that Hamlin lease ,” she said.
You’re referring to the floor stand that resembled an outhouse, right?
” I believe it was an old outhouse that was converted into a deer remain.” Keep in mind that we had to sit on the same board seats because neither of us wanted to look into it, and then suddenly there was a rattlesnake.
We both shivered at the memory of a two-foot rattlesnake that crept out from under our seats and crouched round, leaving us with no choice but to hold our breath until it left on its own.
I’m not sure if the initial use or the serpent was worse. They at least nailed to the wall half of a Sears Christmas catalogue.
Willie nodded as if I had said something meaningful. ” Gave me something to look at when there weren’t any deer in the area.” It’s hard to imagine the price of a Davy Crockett traveling camp in 1995.
I turned on a small burner to prevent frosting from forming, and thank goodness heat came out. A thud next to me shook the walk. What are you doing right now?
I can’t see out the window because this seat is very small. He pounded the roof with his elbow with each heart as he worked at the piston on the side like a man jacking up his car. As he adjusted the elevation, the chair and both of his legs squeaked.
Until he reached out and slid open the copper windows directly in front of where we were sitting, I believed his sounds had subsided. He adjusted his place and opened the window to his part, but it was still blocked.
He put on a pair of sheep gloves as warm air poured in, neutralizing my heater.
I watched as he pulled out a flask from his daypack and set it and two covered cups on the shelf in front of us, mesmerized by the shenanigans of people I’ve hunted with for more than forty years.
By that point, it was sufficiently light to see the chamber feeder 100 yards away and the chilly mix falling outside. Without saying a word, he handed me one of the two cups of coffee and swiveled to the right to look out the window. He added milk, sugar, and some sort of foo-foo seasoning to his steaming coffee after observing nothing.
He drank a beverage. You desire a bread?
” No. I’ll simply consume this.
He separated the two pieces of the baked good, unwrapped it, and dug round in his crate. I’m eating milk cheese and butter.
” I’ll bet you would.”
He took a bit after finishing his pleasures and grinned at me. ” I believe I’m prepared.”
” To offer bacon and eggs to one”?
He moved the flask closer to me, absolutely missing my sarcasm. ” No, I’m waiting to see a hog or deer come and walk out.” Do you realize that this is the first day we have hunted on a piece of property owned by one of us? Despite decades of being on lease, we are now able to modify your walk however we see fit.
I took a taste of black coffee instead of making the clear joke about having to purchase the property. You’re considering hanging pictures on the walls, right?
He cocked an ear. ” Perhaps. There, I have a few older hunting prints. His fingers jerked. ” We could stand them it.” It would feel somewhat cozy.
As we gazed across the icy environment, silence filled the air.
Willie increased the temperature. ” Power is the only thing we could use in this place.” Therefore, we could prepare a container of Folgers that would remain warm and have an odorless electric heater.
Again, I refrained from talking about his propensity for mating. ” If you want, feel free to run a power line up here.”
He grunted as ice rattled on the perforated tin roof of the stand, missing the irony. Yes, we are all hot, toasty, and dry around.
I shuddered as the floor turned pale due to the buildup of snow. ” I have a plan for tomorrow morning.”
What is that, exactly?
” We go outside to the store next to our house around day, plug in a coffee dish, and turn on the steam.” A hundred yards away, I set up another feeding.
” You omitted to inform me of that.” He scowled. Why are we outside in this climate, then?
” Forget about the past.” It is referred to as history.
” What the hell with custom.” With heat and electricity, we may walk sixty seconds from the property to the store.
Willie stopped. ” And a restroom.” That was one advantage of the Hamlin walk.
“Really?”
He let out a sigh. ” A lot of caffeine. I’ll get right again.
I reclined and smiled as he ventured outside into the chilly weather.
” Jeeze!” He had located the plastic serpent I had left outside.
