Texas House District ( HD ) 93 and Senate District ( SD ) 22 will each have two elections on the November 3 ballot, with one for the special election that Governor recently called. one for the common vote, Greg Abbott.
House District 93
After state representative Nate Schatzline (R-Fort Worth ) resigned from his position on July 2, Abbott convened a special election to fill the vacancy in HD 93. The winner of the special vote will replace the chair from November through January.
The applicant for the 90th Texas Legislature will be chosen for the next HD 93 primary, which will take place starting January 12, 2027.
Abbott called the election on August 20 and submitted it to the Texas Secretary of State ( SOS ) at noon that day, according to the proclamation. Candidates had six hours to submit their vote application.
The two candidates for the special election are the same as the two candidates for the common election: Republican Ericka Lomick and Republican Alan Blaylock.
Blaylock told The Texan that he learned about the particular vote the day it was made public and that he filed the same day. He failed to respond to The Texan’s inquiry regarding how he came to learn about the particular election.
Lomick claimed that Democrat Party officials told her about the unique election only two hours before the filing date. She claimed that she applied that day for a job at around 4:55 p.m.
Lomick told The Texan via email that” the short notice]for filing ] created an unexpected challenge, but my team stayed focused and finished the filing.”
Making sure voters understand their vote and have the details they need to safely join is my greatest issue right now. ” Citizens of HD 93 deserve a fair process, accurate information, and picture that places their requires first,” she continued.
Both candidates intend to tell voters about the two distinct HD 93 elections through their plan contributions. At the time of publication, neither candidate’s plan blogs contained details about the special election.
Given the two votes on the ballot, Lomick is concerned about voting confusion, but Blaylock said he” believes voters to know”.
District 22 of the Senate
Additionally, on May 29, Abbott ordered a special election to fill the seat vacated by state senator Brian Birdwell (R-Granbury ). Birdwell accepted a place as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Sustainment at the Pentagon in President Donald Trump’s administration.
Candidates had until 6 p.m. on August 20 to submit an application for the position, and Abbott’s order for a special election in SD 22 was issued on August 18.
Democratic candidates Amy Martinez-Salas and Republican state representative David Cook (R-Mansfield ) are up for both the SD 22 special and general elections.
Texas Election Code
A special election to fill a vacancy” may be ordered as soon as practicable after the vacant occurs,” as per Texas Election Code 201.051.
The Vote Code recommends that a particular election be held on the same day as the general election be held, which would appear to be on August 17. The HD 93 particular election was mandated on August 18 and the SD 22 special election was mandated on August 20.
Texas Election Code 201.054( f ), which states that” for a special election to be held on the date of the general election for state and county officers, the filing deadline is 6 p.m. of the 75th day before election day,” addresses candidate filing deadlines for special elections.
The deadline for the 75th time prior to November 3 was August 20 for both particular elections.
Filling openings in the Legislature is specifically addressed in Texas Election Code Section 203. It permits the organization of a special election to be held on a consistent election day, on or after 36 times after the vote was mandated.
Abbott’s office did not respond to a request for a statement regarding the proclamation’s schedule and the six-hour registration deadline for special election candidates prior to the release date.
