Did you know that organizations are working to reintroduce redfish as a food crop?
It is necessary to second glance back in time to see where the prospect of redfish is headed.
For many years, professional fishermen targeted redfish strongly with reed nets, bag seines, and other highly effective tools. Recreational fishing in Texas were even permitted to utilize reed nets to catch redfish and other well-known fish. When he was younger, my father advocated using a reed net to catch multiple schools of fish at once. Although it now seems like a waste, folks used to do things that way back then.
In recent years, Texas red disc groups have increased dramatically.
By the 1970’s, the British government fell in love with redfish, partly because of New Orleans Chef Paul Prudhomme’s popular “blackened redfish” meal. Redfish communities were harmed, and recreational anglers had to endure terrible hunting conditions. Redfish was declared a game fish by a group of concerned seaside fishing, who fought to keep it protected from commercial fishing. The Gulf Coast Conservation Association ( GCCA ), now known as the Coastal Conservation Association (CCA ), was born out of the “redfish wars” that many outdoor writers refer to as having existed in those days.
The Texas Parks & Wildlife Department ( TPWD ) and the then Gulf Coast Conservation Association ( GCCA ) spearheaded aggressive stocking efforts, which were combined with the ban on commercial redfish harvest, gave the redfish population a much-needed boost. At the time of this writing, Texas has stocked more than 100, 000, 000 redfish seedlings into southern sea techniques and rivers. Redfish were likewise subject to a slot cap, which kept the older breeding bull reds from being harvested.
Redfish figures had stabilized by the early 1990s, and many outdoor anglers were beginning to catch them. By 1994, redfish numbers had reached a high point that TPWD scientists decided it was acceptable for anglers to yield a few rooster redfish a year. A particular red disc” prize tag” was created by TPWD.
Fast forward to the 2000s. Redfish are currently extremely vast, with reports of them in Gulf Coast sea systems in record numbers. Redfish lovers are experiencing a sort of enlightenment.
But there are factors to become concerned.
For instance, there are some fish in Louisiana who claim that redfish are to blame for the drastic decline in blue crab numbers and average size in Louisiana’s wetlands. Certainly their swamps ‘ tens of thousands of turtle traps, I’m sure of it.
It must be the redfish, correct?
Federal fisheries managers were asked to consider a “limited commercial season” for redfish by the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council ( GMFMC)’s ( RDAP ) Red Drum Advisory Panel ( RDAP ) back in 2001. A related suggestion was made in 2015, but they rejected it the first day.
And since then, it has been discussed in various forums.
Redfish stocks may be able to sustain a business harvest, but to be completely honest, those fish are not intended to be used for sport fishing or any other purposes.
Sport anglers, on the other hand, are the ones who funded substantial stocking initiatives that increased the fish’s general population in Texas and other parts of the Gulf Coast and paid for redfish repair through salt stamp sales. Redfish regulations have been put in place to protect game fishing. The commercial fishermen almost fished redfish into obscurity the last time they caught them. That is not an view, but a documented point.
These ideas keep coming up, but they never materialize. Redfish protection is still a top priority for conservation organizations and state fish and game organizations despite the fact that numerous other issues are consuming NMFS’ time and resources.
Only time will tell whether the redfish wars that dominated the 1970s seaside fishing image will ever return. If the fights do begin, it’s possible that the redfish may emerge victorious once more.

President Bush’s Redfish Executive Order
Redfish and striped bass were protected in national waters by President George W. Bush in an executive order in 2007.
Here is the exact words.
It is hereby ordered by the United States of America under the laws and the Constitution of the United States of America to assist in the faithful application of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, the Atlantic Coastal Fisheries Cooperative Management Act, and the Atlantic Striped Bass Conservation Act ( chapters 38, 71A and 71A of title 16, United States Code ), and to protect striped bass and red drum fish.
Part 1. Coverage. It may be the policy of the United States to conserve striped bass and dark drum for the fun, economic, and environmental benefit of the present and future generations of Americans, based on sound science and in cooperation with State, regional, local, and tribal governments, the private sector, and others, as appropriate.
Sec. 2. Application. The Secretary of Commerce shall: ( a ) In order to carry out the policy set forth in section 1,
( i ) encourage, as appropriate, management under Federal, State, territorial, tribal, and local laws that supports the policy of conserving striped bass and red drum, including State designation as gamefish where the State determines appropriate under applicable law,
( ii ) update existing laws as necessary, including those that prohibit the sale of red drum and striped bass caught off the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico.
( iii ) periodically assess the populations of red and striped bass in waters that fall under American law;
( A ) take the necessary actions in accordance with the Secretary of Commerce’s discretion to carry out the policy stated in section 1 of this order;
( B ) make recommendations to the President regarding any actions the Secretary may deem necessary to take to advance the policy set forth in section 1.
( b ) Nothing in this order shall preclude or restrict the production, possession, or sale of striped bass or red drum fish that have been produced by aquaculture.
Given that the majority of the redfish population lives in state lakes, it’s worth noting that a Texas leader made a statement for redfish. Orders like this can be overturned.
