The attempted mid-decade redraw of Texas’ congressional map began formally in a Thursday select committee meeting full of irate Democrats and mostly silent Republicans, the latter of whom are positioned to achieve their desired result — even if it’ll be unpleasant.
President Donald Trump and the White House are on a mission to find more winnable seats for the GOP in next year’s potentially difficult midterm election. They’ve pushed multiple states to redraw their maps to squeeze out any gettable seats in the 435-member House of Representatives. Texas is serving as the guinea pig, but both Missouri and Florida have been mentioned as the next states to follow.
