Texas squared off with the federal government at the U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday over the Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s (NRC) approval of a license to store spent nuclear fuel at a Permian Basin facility.
At the center of the dispute is an Andrews County facility that currently stores low-level radioactive waste but sought approval for interim storage of high-level waste, also known as spent nuclear fuel. The facility is a joint project between Interim Storage Partners and Orano USA.
