After seeing an advert for a “mountain goat hunt” in Texas, a hunter reached out to Texas Fish & Game. Because he had never owned a mountain goat in Texas, he was intrigued by the promise and wanted to verify the information.
Upon investigation, I told him he “mountain goats” being referred to were not the correct Rocky Mountain animals that one might expect. Instead, the advertisement promoted a hunt for” New Zealand mountain goats,” or” Angora goats.” This particular advertisement was never a well-known link or anything else because it was on a social media platform.
Mohair-eyed Angora animals are well-known for their wild behavior and are taken in sport estates when kept on open range.
Texas does, however, have a significant population of Spanish goats, also known as” Catalinas”. These animals are frequently used for soccer, and the state’s goat chases are well-liked. Spanish animals are local home breeds with feral populations in Texas and lacking in characteristics like mountain goats.
The real Rocky Mountain sheep is a distinct varieties, recognized by its heavy white coat and robust build, adapted to warm, mountainous environments. These animals are commonly found in the northern Rockies, ranging through parts of Canada and the United States, including Colorado, Montana, and Idaho. However, there are no groups of Rocky Mountain sheep in Texas.
The hunter’s email exposed a widespread myth that was brought up by confusing terminology in hunting promotions, especially now that unnatural intelligence is being employed to produce advertisements.
