In a study that was published in Geophysical Research Letters, researchers from Florida have discovered many wave risks in the Gulf of Mexico from submarine landslides.
Underwater landslides may pose risks to coastal communities and offshore infrastructure, including causing floods and causing damage to fuel platforms, pipelines, and underwater cables, according to a report in the paper Abundant Spontaneous and Dynamically Triggered Submarine Landslides in the Gulf of Mexico.
These ravages may lead to additional climate harms, quite as oil spills. Both identifying these landslides and comprehending their failure processes have cultural significance and philosophical merit. We discovered 85 earlier unknown submarine floods in the Gulf of Mexico between 2008 and 2015 using 8 years of continuous geological data. The remaining 75 were triggered by the passing seismic surface ripples from distant earthquakes, while the majority of these mudslides occurred without prior disasters. Our strategy suggests that tsunami warning systems could use rural detection technology for offshore landslides.
