Could you use a gas propeller to run your boat one day? Yamaha is testing the waters by developing the first hydrogen-powered offshore and energy system, which may seem unlikely.
At the 2024 Miami International Boat Show, Yamaha unveiled the first hydrogen offshore.
The first design was created in collaboration with Regulator Marine and Roush. This time, they intend to start testing the gas setup, which is based on a Regulator 26XO. The biggest key is not allowing the offshore to work on hydrogen. After all, combustion is fire, and gas actually holds more potential strength ( nearly three times as much ) than gasoline. Storing it, however, is quite a key. Energy tanks must be built to exacting specs, and must be able to contain enormous pressure. Check out this image of the design Regulation to see what all of this adds up to.
The boat’s inside is displayed in Miami.
The two forward tanks did n’t fit into the frame, but as you can see, the hydrogen tanks, three in all, dominate the belowdecks space of the boat. The ship’s architecture had to be set up specifically for the vehicles, and piping and wiring had to be rerouted. Okay, but they fit them in there – wonderful. But how much variety do those three large tank provide for you? Yamaha believes it will be about 50 yards. As we all know, for most anglers, that simply wo n’t cut it. However, they also believe that with some day, experiment, and practice, they’ll be able to boost this amount considerably.
Another issue is system. This say you get a gas boat. Where exactly do you intend to fill it up? Finally, there’s the security issue. Many people are concerned that driving around in a car with gas tanks in is more or less equivalent to carrying a bomb. However, fuel tanks are not simply immune to explosions, as we already do every day in both our ships and our cars.
But: will we be running around in gas ships? No likely anytime soon. But do n’t bet the farm that it will never happen. When Yamaha gets involved in a project like this, you may imagine there is a very real chance of success in the future. There are already plans for hydrogen fueling stations in Europe.
