A 283-pound eel par was caught and released at Sam Rayburn Reservoir near Lufkin by Art Weston of Union, Kentucky, shattering one of the oldest and holiest freshwater fishing information in history.
Earlier in September, thanks to Kirk Kirkland of Trinity, word of the large fish first surfaced. It really did n’t come as a surprise.
Kirkland is a seasoned fishing guide who uses rod and reel to specifically target the fanged titans. He refers to his fishing vessel as the” Garship Enterprise” made of aluminum. Large fish warrior Weston enjoys chasing International Game Fish Association collection class records and is thrill-seeking.

The official data keeper of fish caught from freshwater and saltwater is the Florida-based IGFA. When evaluating applications for world records, the institution adheres to a specific code. The goal is to make sure that all weights, papers, and catches are genuine.
Weston is skilled at using address that is better suited for smaller fish to break report marks. He had 23 IGFA rod and reel series school records at the time of the last count, many more were pending, and a few were retired.
Eight gator gar and longnose gar species that have been caught with Kirkland are included in his latest list of licensed records, which includes 14 species from six different nations. A 110-pound eel par range record was set in October 2022 at Choke Canyon after being caught on a 2-pound line.
A 251-pounder that Weston caught and released on the Trinity River in April 2023 was his past personal best-sized alligator. By now, that bass ought to be certified as the IGFA 80-pound line group report.
The 52-year-old economic analyst managed to catch an even larger bass on a damp Saturday that fell during the middle of Labor Day weekend, which is difficult to imagine with much smaller collection.
Weston’s 283-pound warrior had a 48-inch size and was 8 foot, 4 inches long. It surpasses the previous earth and Texas all-tack position records by four pounds and is the largest alligator gar that IGFA has documented in 72 years.

The later Bill Valverde of Mission set the previous world history, a 279-pounder, in December 1951. Shannon Tompkins, an outside reporter for the Houston Chronicle, reported in 2019 that Valverde used a homemade bamboo pole to reel in the enormous fish. According to the report, polyester range with an undetermined breaking strength was used to spool his Montague reel.
To bring in the new world record, Weston used a 5 12 feet GOOFISH wire and dangled the reel from hewa 19 Emcast freespool spinning reel. Surprisingly, he was able to catch the fish using a six-pound check line.
The Momoi monofilament line was fastened to a 70-inch, 175-pound check metal head and an 8/0 J-hook that was used as bait and was in compliance with IGFA’s legal requirements for earth record catches.
The number of fishermen who questioned why Weston would pursue big fish using such light tackle amused him a little. When he and Kirkland went fishing that morning, the all-tangle world record alligator was n’t even on his radar. At the time, his objective was to find one that was heavier than IGFA’s 123 lb, 9 ounce, six-pound line class record.
According to Weston,” I could have used a 130-pound check and it would still have been the all-tackle earth record.” The six-pound check series I was using at the moment, and somehow it worked out, is just not logical to think you’re going to get a fish weighing 283 pounds.
The enormous gar did n’t appear easily. As the fish circled a 15-acre open grassland just north of the State Highway 103 bridge after being connected, Kirkland used the outboard engine to keep up with it. The liquid is between 12 and 15 feet strong, has a sand bottom, and has few obstacles. Kirkland made the discovery a long time ago. He described it as a location where bass like to congregate.
He remarked,” They were actually rolling in there that day.”
Weston claimed that a nearly three-hour-long battle that was exhausting could have gone horribly wrong, but it did n’t. If the narrow line had come into contact with a rock or tree branch, it would have ended immediately.
He said,” I still ca n’t believe we succeeded.” It was an astonishingly large seafood. I ca n’t express enough how Captain Kirk has assisted me in catching so many fantastic fish. He is the best there is, but there are n’t many guides who will put up with a record hunter and all the work it takes.
It’s possible that fertile imaginations are wondering how old for a seafood could be. Examining the otolith tooth inside the turtle’s bone is the only way to know for sure, but doing so requires killing the animal.
After weighing the large gar on a local beach using the IGFA certified level Kirkland carries in his boat, Weston did the flaunting thing and released it alive.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Dan Daughterty, a fish scholar, has over the years grown hundreds of eel par. He thinks the seafood was between 80 and 100 years old.
He claimed that gator gars longer than eight feet are extremely uncommon. We have handled hundreds of eel gar over the years. We’ve just seen a few in the 8-foot group, despite the fact that the six footers are fairly common and the seven footer are not uncommon. As a result, there is not much information available about the age of tuna this size. The information we do have indicates that this fish is probably quite old. We aged the 8 feet, 5.25 inch seafood that was unintentionally caught in a professional fisherman’s nets in Lake Chotard, Mississippi, in 2011 for contrast. The most recent forecast for that seafood is somewhere around 100 years old. The Sam Rayburn fish is in the same league, I’d venture to imagine.
