A” no fee” access lease on the Guadalupe River from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ( TPWD ) gives anglers access to a prime location for rainbow trout fishing during the height of the winter stocking season.
Almost a half-mile of bank accessibility along rotating pools and revolvers on the Guadalupe River can be found at Camp Huaco Springs, which is situated between New Braunfels and Sattler. Anglers can use the rough, gently sloping banks or swim fish upstream and downstream to take advantage of a low-water dam at the property’s lower or deep pool at its lower end. For the purpose of fishing, they may also start non-motorized boats, canoes, kayaks or other floating objects.
Beginning on December 1 and lasting until March 2, people entry is open from 30 minutes prior to sunrise until sunset.
According to Patrick Ireland, TPWD Inland Fisheries Division San Marcos and Austin District Supervisor, this contract site offers excellent river trout fishing access and stunning Guadalupe River scenery.
From beginning December through late February, TPWD may share this and other areas of the Guadalupe River, also known as the Canyon Reservoir Tailrace, with more than 20,000 rainbow trout. Before going fishing, anglers should examine the 2023–24 Trout Stocking Schedule online to ensure the stocking date, find out more about the locations and advice for angling with winter trout.
Anglers may keep up to their daily bag limit of five fish with no minimum size limit because Camp Huaco Springs is subject to provincial tuna requirements. A current hunting license that includes a saltwater fish endorsement is required for trout fishermen 17 years of age and older.
Anglers may be able to access the river for free in another trout-rich areas, such as Guadalupe Park, run by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, but they should be aware that special rules and restrictions begin 800 yards inland from the Canyon Dam release to the next bridge crossing on River Road.
