In Upper Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay, the dog days of summer are among the best times of the year to go fishing. Crowds decrease after July 4th, and the summer’s feverish excitement dies down. Additionally, living below the surface develops a sluggish pattern that may provide some of the year’s most reliable fishing opportunities.
Redfish and dark roller are transported to the ocean by the thousands by gentle winds in the morning and at night cooling of deep water flats. These gamefish will be rummaging about looking for crabs, minnow, crab, and sand eels when anglers step out of the boat or wade into water that is less than knee deep. Start off by traveling along the Padre Island National Seashore as well as Mustang Island’s Eastern Shoreline, which runs between Port Aransas. Some of the world’s best deep water fishing is accessible to the public in both locations. These fish will be hunting with their heads down at sunrise, with feathers and tails above water. This topwater can be launched over great distance, and the vibration of its edge draws redfish. I prefer to move around the neighborhood in a grid pattern when blind casting the flats, walking quietly while keeping an eye out for any redfish that might suddenly look in my field of vision. The National Seashore’s Bird Island Basin is the ideal location to stroll through before heading north to engage in some of your best shallow-water fish. Redfish, drum up deep, trout in the grass, and thin hard sand that drops off into waist-deep marbled grass!
At dawn, I’ll be drifting the thin flats in my ultra-shallow water Dargel Skout while using my Minn Kota Trolling Motor to search for trout ready to breach topwaters along the ICW canal’s edges. Using my Humminbird Side Scan, we will proceed to the deeper drop-offs along the ICW Canal in search of trout and redfish institutions. This crucial sonar unit can tell the difference between different kinds, directions, and locations of each bass along the way. Trout migrate to deeper waters during the summer when the temperature is cooled by coastal movement.
As fishing swarm to the shore for some late summer shore fishing, the Surf will begin to flatten. The best fish for enthusiastic fresh anglers to catch are little sharks. Start by placing some deceased crab on a weighted equipment and little hook. Whiting will be available anywhere and are delicious to eat with no restrictions or minimum size. Additionally, scalped brain sharks in the second and third guts, as well as the little black tip, make excellent cut bait from these whiting.

Summertime is in full swing, and although it’s South Texas, the temperatures and heat index are terrible.
We eagerly anticipate the second huge bottom water blow up as we get ready to slide off the boat into the calm water for that first wade of the morning. These early summer sunrises are so wonderful.
Trout and redfish patterns are normally predictable as the water temperature rises above 90 degrees. During this time of year, our regular doesn’t change all that much. If the floating grass permits it, we begin our evenings with the intention of using topwater baits.
If not, we would use 1 / 16 lead head with our go-to Down South Lures, Supermodel, which come in a variety of colors depending primarily on the clarity of the water and the sunny / overcast skies.
We switch to a heavier lead head, 1 / 8 or 1 / 4 ounce, as the temperature and sun rise throughout the day in order to reach the trout that have fallen off to the cooler, deeper water.

This approach is very comparable to fish for spoils and mid-bay reefs along the Intracoastal lake. For instance, as the day goes on, the fish in Nueces Bay may hold nearer to the reefs and drop off into the calmer waters. The best fish bite, according to our research, will occur very quick and within a limited window. It will probably be difficult for us to throw fish into the vessel if we have missed this window, and it will be a lengthy mill. In order to be secure with the day’s results, we personally feel more confident when we are aware of several areas with high potential.
If you missed that glass, we strongly advise you to have a fallback game plan in place. Going after redfish is another game strategy this time of year after your early-morning fish bite because they are less sensitive to the rising water temperatures.
Redfish typically spend the entire day on the flats or straight when they drop off, according to our observations. When we are using artificial lures to catch redfish at this time of day, our go-to is someone with either a lot of neck vibration, such as Down South Lures, and one of Krystal’s friends is the Lil John Dart because of its chaotic action, which drives the fish crazy.
If you can catch the redfish’s interest, it will pique their interest and trigger a response even when they aren’t eating. Believe it or not, this strategy frequently will out fish stand or cut bait.
These decades have seen consistent good actions, and we regularly catch limits of redfish and fish in a variety of ways. We take advantage of this time of year to have meaningful moments on the boat with our clients to explain why we are hard core unnatural fishermen and the benefits of throwing artificial bait as opposed to live bait so that we can cover a lot of water drift fishing or wade fishing. The likelihood of a hit increases if you can fan your cast rather than constantly rebating your line to get rid of the unnecessary hardhead.

It is up to anyone to consider being protected in the water and to practice being respectable and responsible towards one another at this time of year when our coastal waters are teeming with fun boats, kite surfers, kayak riders, and jet skiers.
