In a race for Texas ‘ Congressional District ( CD ) 23, Republican candidate Brandon Herrera will face Democrat Katy Padilla Stout, also known as” The AK Guy.”
Ben Mendoza, an independent member, is even up against the two.
The area leans Republican at R-57 %, which is unaffected by the country’s most recent gerrymandering, which occurred last year, according to The Texan’s Texas Partisan Index.
Former U.S. Representative Tony Gonzales (R-TX-23 ), who ended his re-election campaign in March of this year amid controversy over an alleged sexual relationship with a former staffer who later committed suicide, was the district’s most recent representative. The vacant position was officially filled by Gonzales ‘ resignation in April.
In a Democratic runoff contest for the district in 2024, Gonzales defeated Herrera, who had recently lost by merely over 400 votes.
843 yards of Texas ‘ 1, 200-mile border with Mexico are covered by CD 23, which extends across the country’s eastern region. The district’s overall population, according to U.S. Census Bureau data, is close to 800,000 with a focus on financial and health care. Additionally, the Permian Basin is included in the city.
On Tuesday, the two candidates squared off in a conversation that focused on some of their main points and variations as candidates. The discussion covered problems involving borders, data centres, gun rights, and rural health care.
Herrera, an online media personality and gun manufacturer based in San Antonio, is passionate about issues ranging from border security to affordability, Second Amendment rights, and senior health care.
His campaign claims that its goals are to “reinforce the Live in Mexico” plan and stop the abuse of the prison system. A federal judge recently upheld the Trump government’s” Remain in Mexico” policy, finding it to be in violation of U.S. immigration legislation. The case is expected to go before the U.S. Supreme Court. Additionally, Hernandez warns against “any legislation that does not provide for comprehensive border security through advanced technology, increased Border Patrol existence, and proper infrastructure, where appropriate.”
But, Herrera has spoken out against building border walls in the Big Bend area, and his strategy calls for a real wall given Big Bend’s naturally tough terrain.
When Herrera questioned the presence of data centres, Herrera said,” It’s become quite evident that West Texas has become the center of this country right now.
The issue is that when they enter because we don’t have any restrictions, they buy up the land and drain water from our groundwater, which they do not have, which drives up the local people’s energy costs.
Herrera and Padilla Stout were even questioned about the Second Amendment. Within CD 23 was the tragically located shooting at 2022 Robb Elementary in Uvalde that resulted in the murder of 19 children and two people. In her response, Herrera questioned why there wasn’t “armed surveillance at schools protecting our children.”
He claimed that the country sends a text that its officials and money are valued more than its children.” Our politicians get armed protection, banks get trained security, but our children do not,” he said. That must stop, in my opinion.
After a significant legal change prevented Herrera from obtaining a pending purchase with state representative Wes Virdell (R-Kerrville ), which omitted the need for federal registration.
If Democrats won the state majority in the midterm elections, voters may anticipate” no improvement and a bunch of fake prosecution hearings,” Herrera said at a rally in San Antonio last week that included President Donald Trump’s attendance.
He continued,” This is a fantastic election to vote dark up and down the vote.”
Attorney and former professor Padilla Stout, who is also a lawyer and former tutor, has focused her campaign on the Affordable Care Act, gun violence, and immigration reform.
According to Padilla Stout, the problem with living costs begins with” a good income code.” She continued,” We need a tax code that encourages the middle class and transitions people from poverty to end school.”
Padilla Stout, who spoke to Big Bend border design during the conversation, claimed Herrera was” still campaigning with]U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA-4)], the same people who are pushing this mission of building a wall in Big Bend. I don’t believe with any of this.
Padilla Stout put it this way:” We and I strongly believe in no wall, without exceptions, and you can take that to the bank.”
Padilla Stout responded to questions about data centers in the parliamentary debate by saying that a “minimum standard” needed to be established for officially regulating data centers. We must make sure there is a minimum standard of legislation in our nation. Stout argued that we shouldn’t let each group fight alone in this area.
In response to a question about the application of the Second Amendment, Padilla responded,” It’s obvious that Brandon Herrera hasn’t done much research into school shootings, or he would be aware that there are numerous school shootings where we have armed officers on the field.”
She continued,” That does not work,” and switched to” things that do work,” listing “investing in mental health” and “raising the assault weapons]purchasing age to 21 .”
This talk about using techniques we know to protect our children, she said.
Herrera refuted her assertions by citing examples of equipped people effectively preventing shootings. Padilla Stout argued that the conversation should be about education and that” students and teachers need safety and they need true policies that are going to do that, no rhetoric.”
In the last reporting period, Padilla Stout has raised more than$ 260 000 and has over$ 171 000 in cash. In the previous two weeks, Herrera has raised more than$ 766,600 and has over$ 317,300 in cash. Additionally, Hernandez already owes$ 570,000 in debt.
The Federal Ethics Commission estimates that Matthew Ocko, the leader of the venture capital firm DCVC, and Cherif and Sarah Boudjakdji, who each contributed$ 43, 700 and$ 20, 500 to Herrera’s plan.
Padilla Stout’s main sources of funding are primarily individual donors, with her highest contributions being in the$ 3,500 range.
Ben Mendoza, the separate candidate, is a native of El Paso and has a background in business and advertising. Mendoza supports expanded annual H-2A and H-2B permits while taking a strong stand on border security, according to the San Antonio Report.
Mendoza responded,” The Congress needs to impose a search on the Executive Branch as provided by the Constitution,” when asked about the administrative firm’s claim of power over national security concerns.
