Nearly 4.5 million votes were cast in Texas’ primaries on March 3, with Democratic voters accounting for more than 2.3 million of those — setting a record in the amount of votes cast in a Texas primary, and bearing a stronger showing from Democrats than Republicans.
Texas’ 2026 primary election included over 800 statewide and local races, with its top-of-the-ballot U.S. Senate bid pitting high-profile candidates against one another in both parties. Ultimately, state Rep. James Talarico (D-Austin) beat out Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (D-TX-30) in the Democratic primary, while the Republican race resulted in a runoff between incumbent U.S. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
