Acting Comptroller Kelly Hancock announced that more than 20,000 students had applied for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), the state’s education savings account (ESA) program, by noon on opening day, February 4.
The ESA program was created during the 89th Legislative Session in Senate Bill 2. The contentious bill faced opposition from every House Democrat and two Republicans. Gov. Greg Abbott signed the bill into law on May 3.
