Members of the Texas House Democratic Caucus who broke quorum during the summer of 2025 to delay a vote on the GOP-favored congressional redistricting map were fined about $9,000 each for absence-related costs, per a notice distributed on Tuesday.
Democratic members returned to the Texas Capitol on August 18 after fleeing over two weeks earlier for more Democratic states, such as Illinois, in order to break quorum in the Texas House of Representatives — aiming to both raise awareness surrounding the proposal as well as delay a vote on what they called a “racist” map.
