The power struggle that is congressional redistricting has seen an escalation in tactics from both sides of the political aisle in Texas. Both Republican and Democratic members of the legislative, and now executive and judicial branches of government, are engaged in a battle of legal precedent and narrative-shaping.
Shortly after the June 22 midnight veto deadline for the regular session, Gov. Greg Abbott made the announcement that he would reconvene the Texas Legislature to address a bevy of items, including “Legislation that provides a revised congressional redistricting plan in light of constitutional concerns raised by the U.S. Department of Justice [DOJ].”
