The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ( TPWD ) advises everyone to prioritize safety as paddlers take to Texas ‘ lakes, rivers, and coastal waters as they travel kayak, canoe, and paddle. Following the necessary safety precautions can prevent injuries and save lives while paddling, as the warmer weather is drawing more outdoors enthusiasts to the water.
Erika Brooks, TPWD boating education training consultant, said cruising is a great way to enjoy Texas ‘ natural beauty, but preparation is essential to staying safe. Knowing the water problems, wearing a properly fitting life jacket, and planning ahead is all make a difference.
Under Texas rules, all paddlers must wear a life jacket that is approved by the U.S. Coast Guard, and only those who are younger than 13 may do so. Paddlers may also research weather forecasts, be familiar with currents in the water, and be prepared to use a whistle or other sound-producing system to call for assistance if necessary.
” Many paddling accidents involve unexpected accidents like submerged obstacles, strong currents, or sudden weather modifications,” said Cody Jones, the assistant commander of marine enforcement for Texas Game Warden. ” A life jacket can make a close contact or a drama by making yourself aware of your surroundings and wearing it.”

Paddlers should avoid drinking alcohol while sailing on the water, swim in groups whenever possible, and let someone know their fly plan, including their anticipated return date and location, and use a bright light when sailing between sunset and sunrise. Staying hydrated and wearing sun safety are both advised as temperatures rise.
